First you have to give the number a name.  Call it Bob.

6 more than 7 times Bob is 41.

(7 Bob) + 6 = 41

Let the number be y.
7 times the number means 7y.
therefore, 6 more than 7y is 41 means 
6 + 7y = 41.
Further simplification :
6 + 7y = 41
7y = 41 - 6 = 35
y = 35/7
   = 5
